| Carolina Mudcats (79-60) 21, Tennessee Smokies (62-76) 2
Zebulon, NC --- The Carolina Mudcats set a franchise record for both runs in an inning and runs in a game as the defeated the Tennessee Smokies 21-2 Sunday night at Five County Stadium in front of 6,122 fans.
In an incredibly bizarre evening, after a delay of just over two hours, Carolina scored 11 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to embarrass the Smokies. Jose Made, an infielder for Tennessee, walked out to the mound to pitch the eighth inning to save arms in the Tennessee bullpen. One out and 12 hitters later, Made exited the game after giving up six
hits, five walks, one hit batsman and 11 runs. Josh Lansford, a third baseman for the Smokies, replaced Made and ended the embarrassment for Tennessee.
Carolina (41-28) scored three runs in the first inning to start the route. The inning was highlighted by a two-run double to right field by Gaby Sanchez and a sacrifice fly by Lee Mitchell.
Carolina would extend their lead to five before Tennessee finally got on the bored in the sixth inning. Sam Fuld and Donnie Veal both hit RBI singles for the only two runs of the game for Tennessee (35-33).
Jarrett Santos (W, 5-1) earned the win for Carolina by pitching five innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Donnie Veal (L, 5-10) took the loss for Tennessee after pitching four plus innings, allowing ten hits and eight earned runs.
The series will conclude Monday afternoon at Five County Stadium at 2:00 PM ET, where Brett Sinkbeil (5-9,5.10) will take the mound against Mark Holliman (3-4,4.50) of Tennessee.
