Gaby Sanchez Receives Mudcats Organization Awards

As the Carolina Mudcats head into the Southern League playoffs, the end of the regular season is when individuals receive special recognition for their accomplishments and efforts both on and off the field.  This team is full of players who made impressive contributions on the field and future major leaguers, but has a few standout players.

We would like to recognize the post-season Southern League All-Stars as voted by the coaches, media, and broadcasters from each team in the league.

Carolina Mudcats representatives on the all-star team are:

Outfielder – John Raynor and

Second Baseman – Chris Coghlan

The Mudcats would also like to recognize Gaby Sanchez, not only was he selected as the post season all-star first baseman, but also named the Southern League Most Valuable Player.  Gaby has put together a tremendous season offensively, some of his accomplishments include:

  • Carolina Mudcats franchise record of 41 doubles
  • Top three in the Southern League in hits and RBI’s
  • A career high in stolen bases and homeruns, 17 of each
  • Topps Southern League player of the Month in July

Sanchez is also a remarkable defensive player at both first and third base, and was voted by Baseball America as the best defensive third baseman in the Southern League.  Gaby is the first Carolina Mudcats league MVP since back to back winners in 1994 -1995, when first baseman Mark Johnson and catcher Jason Kendall won the award.

Along with league MVP honors Gaby has been selected as the recipient of the Carolina Mudcats Ed Hale and Willie Duke end of season awards.  The Willie Duke award recognizes the player that best exemplifies Duke’s spirit and dedication to the national pastime both on and off the field. The Ed Hales award honors the person with the most unselfish attitude, dedication and commitment to the Carolina Mudcats community.

Gaby’s efforts have shone off the field through his enthusiasm for the Miracle League of the Triangle, his interaction with the youth teams here at Five County Stadium, his involvement in the Mudcats youth baseball clinics and various appearances in the community.

Congratulations and Thank you Gaby Sanchez on all of your accomplishments on and off the field!  We wish you the best of luck in your baseball future.

Minors Set Attendance Record for 5th Consecutive
Year; Top 43 Million Fans for First Time in History

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—Minor League Baseball has set a new attendance record for the fifth straight year, thanks to the 316,765 fans who visited Minor League ballparks yesterday on the last day of the regular season for most of the domestic full-season leagues. The Labor Day crowds allowed Minor League Baseball to surpass the 43- million fan mark in a regular season for the first time in its 107-year history.

The current total of 43,112,881 fans is more than 300,000 above last year’s record and will increase further as the New York-Penn (September 6), Northwest (September 3) and Pioneer Leagues (September 5) have not yet ended regular season play.

“Despite the down turn in the economy and battling Mother Nature in the second half of the season, our clubs and fans continue to show support for professional baseball,” said Minor League Baseball President Pat O’Conner.

Minor League Baseball’s unprecedented run of attendance records began in 2004 when its 15 leagues and 176 clubs attracted 39,887,755 fans to eclipse the mark that had stood since 1949. The industry subsequently drew 41,333,279 fans in 2005; 41,710,357 in 2006; and 42,812,812 last year.
